Booking & Pricing
What’s the difference between an hourly rental and a Curated Experience? With an hourly rental, you drive a Polaris RZR on your own schedule, in 2-, 4-, or 8-hour blocks. A Curated Experience is a guided tour: a local Arizona Rock Pirates guide leads your group, handles navigation, and takes you to the canyons, mines, and viewpoints most visitors never find. If it’s your first time riding in the desert, we recommend a guided experience.
How much does a guided UTV tour cost? Curated Experiences are priced per person. The driver pays the base rate, and every additional rider pays a reduced rate, so groups save.
-
Experience (3–4 hours): $239 driver · $119 each additional rider
-
Expedition (6 hours): $279 driver · $139 each additional rider
-
Expedition (8 hours): $329 driver · $159 each additional rider
Machine upgrades (Pro S, Pro R, and XPEDITION) are available for an additional charge. See current rental rates on our Book Now page.
What kind of machines do you have? We’re a Polaris Certified Outfitter. Every booking includes our base machine, the Polaris RZR XP S, in 2-seat or 4-seat models. Seat count depends on same-day availability, and the price is the same either way. Want more? Upgrade for an additional charge to a RZR Pro S, a RZR Pro R (our most powerful, limited fleet), or an XPEDITION — including the air-conditioned XPEDITION Northstar cab for hot days.
What’s included in a rental? Every rental includes helmets, goggles, and fuel. There’s no cleaning fee and no security deposit, so you can ride the dust and leave the mess to us.
Do I need to book ahead? Yes, we recommend it. We’re open year-round. Peak desert season runs October through May, and weekends, holidays, and the busy January–March stretch fill up fast. Book online at piratebackcountryadventures.com or call 833-970-6266.
Do you offer private or custom tours? Yes. We build custom days for families, corporate groups, and special occasions. See Arizona Custom Experiences or give us a call.
Getting Here
Where are you located? Our shop is at 692 W Wickenburg Way, Wickenburg, AZ 85390, in the heart of Arizona’s “Dude Ranch Capital of the World.”
How far is Wickenburg from Phoenix and Scottsdale? About an hour from Phoenix and about an hour and 15 minutes from Scottsdale, via US-60. Approximate drive times:
-
Phoenix: ~1 hour
-
Scottsdale: ~1 hour 15 minutes
-
Prescott: ~1 hour 15 minutes
-
Sedona: ~2 hours
-
Las Vegas: ~3.5 hours
What’s the closest airport? Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) is about an hour and 15 minutes away. Prescott Regional (PRC) also has commercial flights.
Where do I check in, and how early should I arrive? Check in at our Wickenburg Way shop 30 minutes before your reservation. That leaves time for waivers, a vehicle orientation, and gearing up. Late arrivals may lose ride time or their reservation.
Who Can Ride
Is there a minimum age? Riders must be at least 4 years old for any trip length.
Who can drive? Drivers under 18 must have a valid driver’s license, and you must be 18 or older to drive with a passenger. Riders under 18 need a release waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Waivers are available on-site or by email on request.
I’ve never driven a UTV. Can I still go? Absolutely. Every ride starts with a hands-on vehicle orientation and safety briefing. Guided experiences are the easiest way to start: your guide sets the pace and picks the line, so you can focus on the views.
Are there any health or fitness considerations? Desert trails are bumpy, dusty, and can be warm. If you have back or neck problems, are pregnant, or have a condition a rough ride could make worse, please call us before booking so we can recommend the right trip.
Can I bring my dog? Well-behaved dogs are welcome at no extra charge. Choose a machine with room for your pup. Desert ground gets hot and cactus spines are everywhere, so protect their paws and bring plenty of water for them.
Can I drink alcohol before or during my ride? No. Anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs before or during an activity will be refused service and forfeits any refund.

Approximate monthly averages. Always check the forecast before your ride.
What should I expect temperature-wise on the trail? Big swings. Desert temperatures can climb 30 degrees or more from sunrise to mid-afternoon. Winter mornings often start in the 30s and warm into the 60s. Riding in an open-air machine adds wind chill, so the first hour can feel much colder than the thermometer says. Dress in layers you can peel off.
Is it colder on the Crown King tour? Yes. Crown King sits at nearly 6,000 feet in the pines of the Bradshaw Mountains and is often 10–20 degrees cooler than Wickenburg. In winter, expect cold temperatures and possible snow or ice up top. Bring a warm jacket, gloves, and a beanie even if it’s warm when you leave the shop.
Do you ride in summer? Yes, we’re open year-round. Wickenburg summers regularly top 100°F from June through September, so we recommend early-morning rides. Want to beat the heat? Upgrade to a Polaris XPEDITION Northstar, with a fully enclosed cab and air conditioning, so you can explore the desert in comfort (additional charge).
Do tours run if it rains? Tours run rain or shine. The desert gets winter storms and late-summer monsoons, and dry washes can flood fast, even from rain miles away. Your safety comes first: we may change routes, timing, or reschedule at our discretion. When we swap in a trip of comparable length, the price stays the same.
Desert Safety
Is off-roading in the desert safe? Off-roading has inherent risks, and we take them seriously. Every rider gets a vehicle orientation, route guidance, and safety briefing before heading out. Guided tours are led by experienced local guides who know the terrain and its hazards. Rentals include GPS with mapped routes and an emergency communication device.
How do I avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration? Drink water before you feel thirsty, and keep drinking. Desert air is so dry that sweat evaporates instantly, so you can get dehydrated without noticing. Plan on about a liter of water per person per hour in warm weather, and bring an electrolyte drink or salty snacks. Tell your guide right away if you feel dizzy, nauseated, headachy, crampy, or unusually tired. Those are early signs of heat illness. The Arizona sun is strong year-round, so wear sunscreen even in January.
What should I know about cactus? Look, but don’t touch. Cholla (“jumping cholla”) drops spiny segments that latch onto skin, clothing, and shoes at the lightest brush. Keep arms and legs inside the machine, wear closed-toe shoes, and watch where you step at stops. If a cholla segment grabs you, don’t pull it out with your fingers. Ask your guide for help or flick it off with a comb. Saguaros are protected under Arizona law, so never climb, carve, or damage one.
Will I see rattlesnakes or scorpions? Possibly. Rattlesnakes, scorpions, and Gila monsters live here, and snakes are most active on warm spring and fall days. Bites are rare when you follow a few rules: watch where you put your hands and feet, never reach under rocks or into brush, stay on open ground at stops, and give all wildlife plenty of space. If you see a snake, back away slowly and let your guide know.
What about bees? Arizona is home to Africanized honey bees, which defend their hives aggressively. Never disturb a hive or swarm. If bees start chasing you, cover your face, move away quickly, and get into a vehicle or building. Don’t swat, and don’t jump into water.
What are flash floods, and how do you handle them? A flash flood is a fast wall of water rushing down a dry wash, often after rain falls miles upstream. Never drive or walk into a wash with moving water. Turn around, don’t drown. Our guides watch the weather closely and will reroute or reschedule when storms are in the area.
Can we explore the old mines? Enjoy them from the trail, but never enter, climb into, or lean over an abandoned mine shaft or tunnel. Wickenburg is gold rush country, and old openings can hide unstable ground, deep vertical drops, and bad air. Arizona’s rule is simple: Stay Out and Stay Alive.
Is there cell service on the trails? Coverage is spotty in the backcountry. Our guides carry communication devices. If you’re on a rental, stay on your mapped route and tell someone where you’re headed and when you’ll be back.
How do you protect the desert? We’re proud Tread Lightly! partners. Stay on designated trails. Desert soil and plants can take decades to recover from a single set of tire tracks. Pack out everything you bring in.

The Tours
What will I see on an Arizona Rock Pirates tour? Saguaro forests and cholla groves, sandy river washes, rugged rock climbs, sweeping mountain views, and the historic mining routes that made Wickenburg one of Arizona’s oldest towns. Each trail has its own character, from mellow scenic cruises to technical rock crawling.
What is the Backway to Crown King? Our signature full-day Expedition and the ride no one else runs. You’ll climb from the Sonoran Desert through rolling hills and real rock crawling into the cool pines of Crown King, a historic mountain mining town. Then you’ll stop for lunch at the legendary Crown King Saloon (purchased on your own) and loop back to Wickenburg. It’s the ultimate Arizona backcountry day.
Do you have a tour to Vulture City Ghost Town? Yes. Our Vulture City Gold Rush tours pair desert riding with an hour exploring Vulture City, the preserved mining camp around the Vulture Mine, Arizona’s most productive gold mine, discovered by Henry Wickenburg in 1863. Choose a 4-hour Experience or a full-day 8-hour Expedition.
Which tour is right for me?
