Are ATV and RZR rentals in Silverton safe?
Off-road driving in the San Juan Mountains is an outdoor adventure with inherent risk, but safety is our top priority.
We provide a full vehicle orientation, route guidance, and safety recommendations before every ride. While the terrain is wild and unpredictable, our equipment and preparation are designed to help you ride confidently and responsibly.
What happens on a self-guided (unguided) ride?
Before your ride, our team will walk you through your vehicle, routes, and trail options based on your experience level and goals.
Every group receives:
- GPS navigation with mapped Alpine Loop routes
- Emergency communication device in every Polaris RZR
OPERATIONS & LOGISTICS
Did Silverton ban OHVs?
Yes, OHVs are no longer allowed on streets within Silverton town limits. However, this does not affect trail access or the Alpine Loop.
All rides launch from a staging area just outside of town in Howardsville right on the trail system. We offer shuttle options from our downtown location or you may drive yourself.
Where do we meet and pick up our vehicle?
Check in at our office located at 957 Greene Street in Silverton. From there, you’ll receive directions to the nearby launch point, located about 10–15 minutes away near the historic Howardsville area.
What time should I arrive?
Please arrive 30 minutes before your reservation to allow time for check-in, orientation, and travel to the launch location.
How far is Silverton from nearby towns?
Silverton is approximately:
- 1 hour from Durango
- 30 minutes from Ouray
- 2 hours from Telluride
What is the closest airport?
The closest airports are:
- Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO)
- Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) (closer to Ouray and Telluride)
THE EXPERIENCE
What is the Alpine Loop?
The Alpine Loop is a 63-mile scenic off-road route in the San Juan Mountains, connecting Silverton, Ouray, and Lake City via Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass.
It features high-elevation terrain, historic mining towns, alpine lakes, and some of the most breathtaking views in Colorado.
What should I bring for my ATV or RZR rental?
We recommend bringing:
- Sunglasses or eye protection
- Layers or a rain jacket (weather changes quickly)
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Snacks and water
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- A face covering for dust
- Ice for coolers
Can I bring my dog?
Yes—dogs are welcome on your off-road adventure. We recommend choosing a vehicle with enough space for your pet to ride comfortably. There is no additional charge.
WEATHER & POLICIES
What happens if it rains?
Tours operate rain or shine, but safety comes first. We may adjust routes or timing based on weather and trail conditions.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made more than 72 hours in advance may receive a 50% refund.
Cancellations within 72 hours, no-shows, and late arrivals are non-refundable.
In some cases, a one-time reschedule within the same season may be allowed.
