What Is the Baja 1000?

The event’s roots actually go back even further. In 1962, motorcycle racers Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson Jr. made a timed run from Tijuana to La Paz, covering the rugged peninsula in an effort that helped inspire what would become the Baja 1000.
Today, the race attracts professional drivers, motorcycle racers, UTV competitors, and teams from around the world. The course can stretch hundreds or more than a thousand miles, depending on the year’s configuration.
And while the name “Baja 1000” suggests a thousand-mile race, the actual mileage isn’t necessarily exactly 1,000 miles.
For example, the 2025 SCORE Baja 1000 featured an 854-mile loop course beginning and ending in Ensenada. Other recent editions have been considerably longer; the 2023 point-to-point race from La Paz to Ensenada covered 1,310.94 miles.
Where Does the Baja 1000 Course Go?
One of the most fascinating things about the Baja 1000 is how much of the peninsula the course can cover.
Depending on the year, the route can travel through or near places including:

- Ojos Negros
- San Quintín
- San Felipe
- Cataviña
- Bahía de los Ángeles
- Loreto
- La Paz
- Todos Santos
- Cabo San Lucas
- San José del Cabo
The exact route varies, however, so these locations should not be considered a permanent course. In 2026, for example, SCORE announced a historic Baja 1000 course entirely within Baja California Sur, with the race scheduled to start and finish in San José del Cabo. The announced route is expected to pass through or near Los Barriles, La Paz, Ciudad Constitución, Loreto, Puerto San Carlos, Todos Santos, and Cabo San Lucas.
The Terrain Is What Makes Baja Famous
The Baja 1000 isn’t simply a race from one city to another. The course is famous for throwing almost every type of desert terrain imaginable at the racers.
Depending on the route, competitors may encounter:
Desert Trails
Much of the course consists of rough desert roads and trails. These can range from relatively fast dirt roads to extremely technical sections filled with rocks, ruts, and unpredictable terrain.
Rocky Washes
Washes are a defining feature of Baja off-roading. These natural drainage channels can contain loose sand, large rocks, ledges, and deeply rutted sections.
The Ensenada Wash, for example, has been an iconic part of SCORE racing and was included in the 2025 Baja 1000 course.
Sandy and Silty Sections
Sand and silt can dramatically change the way a vehicle handles. Soft sections can slow racers down, while deep silt can hide obstacles and make maintaining control difficult.
Mountainous Terrain
Baja isn’t entirely flat desert. The peninsula contains rugged mountain ranges and elevated terrain, with some race routes climbing thousands of feet in elevation.
SCORE describes Baja 1000 courses as incorporating high-speed dirt trails, sandy, rocky and silty terrain, washes, canyons, and stretches along the coast, with elevations ranging from sea level to more than 4,000 feet on some routes.
Coastal Terrain
One of the unique characteristics of racing in Baja is the combination of desert and ocean. Depending on the year’s route, racers can find themselves traveling through the desert one moment and along the Pacific Ocean or Sea of Cortez the next.
Why Is the Baja 1000 So Difficult?
